Vegetables and hands might get dried, but the towels themselves often end up stained. Through frequent washing and rinsing, they quickly wear out and lose their pleasing appearance. It’s a shame to throw kitchen towels away… Perhaps they could still be useful in the summer kitchen?

Kitchen towels have been repurposed into works of art in Kalamaja Museum’s greenhouse. The towels feature illustrations of hands, fruit, vegetables and berries, offering slightly embellished glimpses of kitchen life.

The SUMMER KITCHEN exhibition by artist Lena Levtšenkova (Jelena Tšekulajeva) is open to visitors in Kalamaja Museum’s greenhouse.
This site-specific art project, known for its ‘green’ approach and inspired by new rather than recycled ideas, originated from a series of drawings featuring hands and vegetables. The kitchen towels used in the exhibition were sourced from museum, from Lena’s mother’s and grandmother’s kitchens and from her own kitchen. The hand models were the artist’s daughter and Lena herself. The artworks on the kitchen towels were created using coloured pencils and markers, making them non-waterproof and unsuitable for regular use.

As part of the exhibition there will be an exchange of recipes:
visitors can jot down a simple summer recipe and exchange it for another to try for themselves at home.

The artist extends their gratitude to the Kalamaja Museum team for their support and for the opportunity to bring the exhibition concept to life.

SUMMER KITCHEN will be open until the end of summer 2024 in the museum’s greenhouse.
