Tallinn City Life Museum and its exhibitions at Vene 17 will be closed for a complete makeover from 3 February 2025. We will be reopening at the end of 2025.
However, the museum’s educational programs and excursions in the Old Town will continue, and you can even invite the museum to come and visit!
You can choose from a range of museum lessons for all school levels.

Price: In Tallinn €8 per participant. Outside of Tallinn €10 per participant. The minimum group size is 15 children.

“Medieval city life”
We will travel back in time 600 years, discovering what everyday life was like in a medieval city. We learn about life in those times, the governing of towns and cities, guilds, crafts and trade. We also find out about medieval food and clothing. The teacher can specify whether they want to focus more on trade or crafts.
Target group: Grades 7 to 9 and upper secondary
Aim: To learn about life in medieval Tallinn

“Stories from Old Tallinn”
Stories and legends of Old Tallinn. We hear stories that of the Old Man of Ülemiste, who must never learn that the city has been completed; of Old Thomas, the symbol of Tallinn; and the master builder behind the tallest building in the city, St Olaf’s Church. We take a creative approach to storytelling and try to step into the shoes of legendary characters ourselves. The museum lesson ends with a creative exercise.
Target group: Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 3
Aim: To discover Tallinn’s best-known legends and true stories

“How well do you know time?”
We travel back in time to explore the Middle Ages and the everyday lives of its people. We try measuring time without a clock and discover the differences between rural and urban life. We also experiment with the perception of time using our own body rhythms and discuss proverbs about time. At the end of the lesson, we make a portable version of Tallinn’s oldest public clock: the one on the wall of the Church of the Holy Spirit.
In spring and autumn, lessons can be combined with outdoor learning in the Old Town.
Target group: Older kindergarten groups and Grades 1 to 6

“Medieval games”
Medieval children rode wooden horses, threw rings of string and did other exciting things. To make sure that today’s children can also enjoy these tricks and games, we bring them into the modern day. We try all the games ourselves, either outdoors in fine weather, or indoors in cold or wet weather.
Target group: Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 3
Aim: To learn about children’s games in the olden days and to thereby learn about history and foster creativity, playfulness and dexterity

“Relationships, sexuality and you”
In this museum lesson we talk about the social side of sexuality: different sexual identities, genders, gender roles and relationships. We talk about how to behave responsibly and with empathy towards yourself and others. The lesson is well suited to complementing the social studies curriculum. The exact content and requirements can be agreed in advance with the person from the museum who will lead the lesson.
The class lasts for 60-90 minutes.
